Dante addresses Virgil, who has emerged from Hell to find and guide Dante on his journey. Virgil lived in Rome around the time of Julius Caesar and was the author of The Aeneid, which Dante considers a masterpiece of literature. Here, Dante acknowledges Virgil as his teacher and a . From a structural point of view, the first two cantos of Inferno function as an introduction, presenting the main dramatic situation and maneuvering Dante and Virgil to the entrance of Hell, the journey through which will constitute the main plot of the poem.
